Mombaruzzo 1894 Pinot Nero – Josh’s Selection

The Monferrato wine region lies below the River Po in the southeast corner of Piedmont, in northwestern Italy. Like Langhe, this zone received its own DOC in 1994. It follows similar relaxed rules allowing the blending of native varieties with international grapes. These wines are sold under the labels Monferrato Rosso and Monferrato Bianco.

Previously, light-hearted, bubble wines were produced here and the zone had been standing, for this reason, in the shadow of more famous wines in Asti and Langhe.

Varietal wines are also made here and must comprise 85 percent of the stated variety. The reds are dominated by the indigenous grape varieties Barbera, Freisa, Grignolino and Dolcetto. The 'international' varieties are led by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir with which producers have created their own interesting niche.

Made from 100% Pinot Noir grapes grown in the hills of Asti in the province of Monferrato, Italy. Stainless steel only is used in this fermentation and refining. The nose of Willamette Pinot and the grip of Burgundy. A great companion for many dishes as its high acidity and ripe strawberry notes make it an easy wine for pairing with options like salmon or other fatty fish and roasted chicken.
