An icon and leading region of New Zealand’s distinctive style of Sauvignon blanc, Marlborough has a unique terroir, making it ideal for high quality grape production. Marlborough is responsible for 90% of New Zealand’s Sauvignon blanc production. The vineyards of Marlborough benefit from well-draining, stony soils, a dry, sunny climate and wide temperature fluctuations between day and night, a phenomenon that supports a perfect balance between berry ripeness and acidity.
Waverley Vineyard is nestled between the bluffs of Blind River half a mile from the sea in the cooler Awatere Valley. There are recognized differences between the wines of the Awatere and Wairau valleys. Awatere wines are fresher and mineral while Wairau wines are more tropical and rounder. Blind River’s most recognizable element is a flinty, smoky minerality. Waverley was planted, mostly, in 2004.
Your glass opens with super-ripe citrus fruits a dash of kiwi fruit and mown grass rounded out by fresh herbs. There is a slight briny character with its savory smokiness. Mouth-watering, juicy, ripe citrus brightness that leads to a beautifully balanced mid-palate full of floral flavors, that super ripe citrus from the nose and a seasoning of dried herbs. The finish is long, with lemongrass and green tea accents that are mouthwatering, and full of everything promised on the nose and already tasted on the palate.
Ranga Ranga can pair well with spicy food from all over, including Thai, Japanese, and Indian but works equally well with seafood, particularly oysters, and fatty cheeses.
