As we revisit a long-standing staple and favorite among new and well-versed guests with us is the unchanging 80/20 blend of Petite Sirah/Petit Verdot. Not only are the combine varietals unique but the barrel aging regiment is just as odd, using 51% American oak, 22% French oak, 18% Hungarian oak, with a total of 11% new barrel for a duration of 14 months.
A geographic and climatic paradise for grape vines, Monterey is a part of the greater Central Coast AVA and contains within it five smaller sub-appellations, including Arroyo Seco, San Lucas, San Bernabe, Hames Valley and the famous Santa Lucia Highlands. The climate is relatively warm but tempered by cool, coastal winds, allowing the regions in Monterey County an exceptionally long growing season. Bud break often happens two weeks sooner and harvest tends to be two weeks later compared to other surrounding regions.
The southern portion of Monterey County is defined by morning fog, strong winds, broad temperature swings and intense sunshine. In Hames Valley, this triad promotes the cultivation of Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot to delicious results. The long, warm days allow full-bodied, dark fruit flavors to develop while the dramatic nighttime cooling preserves the balance and structure of this big, bold wine.
Decadent aromas of blackberry, ripe plum, juicy fig, sweet vanilla and smoky oak. The palate is full-bodied, with soft tannins and a lingering finish of black fruit. Odd Lot Petite & Petit is perfect for any occasion. Enjoy with beef short ribs, lamb chops, grilled eggplant, or aged manchego cheese.
